Did you know that the world now has more than 4 billion internet users? And that 80% of them can be found on social media? Hootsuite and We Are Social recently released their annual Digital in 2018 report. Find the most important data from the Caribbean here.
The name might suggest otherwise, but the Digital in 2018 report by Hootsuite and We Are Social is about the figures for 2017. Probably the best news from the report is that a quarter of a billion new users went online for the first time in the past year. The number of worldwide internet users is now over 4 billion – more than half of the world's population is online! People also spend more time online: the average user spends about 6 hours a day on the internet. If we add this together for all 4 billion internet users in the world, we’ll spend an astounding 1 billion years online in 2018!
The worldwide growth of internet use is mainly due to more affordable smartphones and mobile data subscriptions. In 2017, 200 million people received their first mobile phone and now two-thirds of the world's population of 7.6 billion people have a mobile phone. Moreover, half of these are smartphones, making the internet increasingly accessible to people, regardless of where they are.
The use of social media also continues to grow steadily: the number of users grew by 1 million every month in the past year. That is more than 11 new users per second! According to the report, social media is used every month by 3 billion people worldwide, and almost everyone does this on a mobile device.
Hootsuite and We Are Social also pay attention to the Caribbean in their joint report. So, what are the numbers in the Caribbean? Internet penetration, or the number of internet users compared to the total population, is slightly behind compared with the average of the world: 48% versus 53%. However, the popularity of social media is closer to the average (40% versus 42%).
